welcome to the "Extreme Recycling" page....
Extreme? Seems to be the "in" word at the moment so, seeing as I'm not talking about just putting the bottles in teh bottle bank I thought we call any really, really serious recycling "Extreme Recycling" I found a boat rotting in the woods and the licence afixed to it's stern was 1986! So I asked around and discovered that it had belonged to the former-former-former owners of a local house who had said they would take it with them when they relocated in 1986...they didn't and it has been rotting in the woods, full of rain water, wood decaying, broken under a fallen tree, ever since. After dragging it out I assessed the damage and decided that it would sail again of the beautiful Basingstoke Canal...even if it killed me. So far I have recycled: ~a six foot hardwood plant stake to support the keel ~a length of old leaking garden hosepipe to replace the rubbing strake around the gunwhale ~a piece of plywood (that I salvaged from the skip where the builders are putting the finishing touches to the village school hall) to replace the rotted transome ~an old pallet that repalced the lost partsof the trailer ~the remnants of a glass fibre repair kit that has been sitting in my garage for 15 years ~some hammerite paint that similarly has been here for yonks I have had to buy 12 three inch brass screws, a litre of GRP resin (with hardener)and two packs of GRP mat. Canal Trials took place on the 9th of February when I climbed aboard on the water and we didn't sink like a brick Fitting out is going on at present I'll upload some photos at the official launching
Friday August 15th
Since I have simply not got around to a full scale launching of the reclaimed boat I've not uploaded any news or pictures so you can imagine my glee when I discovered that on the only sunny day this month my son and a couple of mates decided to launch the boat without me!
As you can see it not only floats but it doesn't leak at all and though it may look a little dinky and low in the water it is worth knowing that the lad at the back is 6 foot 8inches tall and a professional bouncer; so it carries a load to boot!
